Where I am they have the same forecast for an area 90% the size of NY state (50,000 sq km versus 55,000 sq km) so they are always right when they say x% of rain because they will definitely get some rain in some part of the area

California is one of the few places on earth that has most of the major climate zones in one geographic area, so weather forecasting for a certain region can be a total crap-shoot.

Beg to differ my friend. Melbourne is renowned for having all four seasons in one day and believe me I know and I don't even live there but have been caught out often enough.

Having lived in Melbourne and Calgary Alberta I can say without any hesitation that Melbourne weather is quite stable.
It never has 30C followed by snow and then flooding rain like Calgary can.

Don't have basements much in Aussie homes and garages in modern homes like ours (it's about 11 years old) have built-in garages as part of the house, usually next to the front door.
