While the chances of rain today supposedly were somewhat less than yesterday, we did have a fairly short lived but very energetic storm come through around 1700. I went out on the back porch to place a bucket under a small leak, and just after doing so the rain and wind increased to terrifying proportions. I have never seem rain come blowing through the porch screen before at that level of intensity. It was a fire hose treatment that left me soaked. I the realized I should have thrown the security bolt for the porch screen door but it was too late for that. I did throw the bolt for the front screen door. I even wondered if a tornado was passing by. In any case, while that level of storm only lasted maybe 15 min before reducing to a light rain we got about 1 inch. Light rain continued off and on for the rest of the evening. But it did cool things down from the afternoon peak of about 90F quite well. Rain chances are significantly higher tomorrow.

The Ross fire has burned more than 141 square miles with containment at only 57% this morning.

It's turning into a rather crispy summer around here.

Well, we had another 1.75 in of rain yesterday, on top of 2.7 in last week and 3.7 in the week before that. The main road in the neighborhood is flooded in the usual spots, big puddles on each side that do not quite meet in the middle. I won't drive anything but my 4X4 pickup through that, although many others are driving cars and not being very concerned about slowing down or following too closely. We have had only about 0.1 inches of rain so far today but it looks like we'll be getting short bursts of rain for the rest of the day.

Good news is that this is cooling things down noticeably, highs in the low 80's, which normally does not happen until October.

Weather has been surprisingly nice lately:
Lower 90's (32-ish) during the day, mid-50's (13c) at night.

It's weather like this, that encourages transplants to move in, then cry when the normal weather sets in...

That shower was 11mm in about 30 minutes and not much sign of run off.

I took these photos yesterday. This is fire season and a bad one. Gums are starting to drop branches which is a survival mechanism. A neighbour a few km away hit a stone with his grass slasher yesterday that sparked a fire that took 20 fire trucks to extinguish. He lost the tractor and slasher but no buildings. He and others lost a lot of grass and unbailed hay.
