I would guess the Nautilus used it's active sonar a lot to find it's way through the uncharted depths.
That's not very stealthy for wartime.

You also need to find your way through the uncharted "roof" ice depth varying quite a bit. Most WW II subs were only good for 20-48 hours submerged at a time (and the higher hours means traveling at about 2-3kts) and all off duty crewmen lying in bunks breathing as little as possible.

and, having ice a density of 0,917 g/cm^3, it means that an iceberg with an height of just 10 m above sea level has a depth of about 120 m below, more or less...
