Well, that. Plus the fact that my wife totalled the van last year and we added a teenage driver.
Friend of mine, my mentor at my first job out of college, described how one day he and his wife went and picked up their new car. On the way home she kept saying she wanted to drive it. He replied that was Okay but she could take over after they got home. She kept insisting she wanted to drive it NOW and so he pulled over and let her take the driver's seat.

Two blocks later she ran a stop sign and totaled it.

And yes, many years later they did get divorced.

By the way, I just got a e-mail from my auto insurance company, USAA, saying that due in part to the State of Florida making changes in the laws relative to insurance and related lawsuits, I would be receiving a credit of $680 on my insurance account.

Today I noted some dark clouds immediately to the West and decided to check the weather radar. I found that my Windows 10/Firefox computer was in one of its introspective menstrual periods and would not be able to deliver what I wanted for some indefinite period. But my old Windows XP/Firefox computer I had cranked up to do some scanning and I decided to try that. Unlike Firefox on Windows 10 the older Firefox on Windows XP works flawlessly but is not welcome on most websites. So I tried to get the local NOAA forecast page and it worked - except for the radar display.

I noted that the forecast had changed. High temperatures over the next few days were forecast to be about 4 to 6 degrees lower than had been shown this morning. Okay.

But then I finally brought up the Win 10 machine and found the NOAA forecast was the same as I had seen earlier today. Temps were 4 to 6 degrees higher than the NOAA forecast on the Win XP machine showed. So I now have both of them up for the same forecast for the same area generated by same Government Website, two identical forecasts that do not say the same thing, apparently just because they are displayed on different PC operating systems.....

There is divorce and adoption, however those are also expensive.
Oh. It's not so bad. Turns out it's only a 250% increase.
My daughter is upset because her portion increased along with everyone else's. I told her if she wants, she can look for her own coverage. Good luck, 19 year old with a speeding ticket. :evil4:

Lucky you! I just get rate hikes. Got my mortgage escrow update today. Thanks to my property taxes and insurance hikes they want an extra $175 a month. Can't wait for the power company and water dept to make their mid-year adjustments.

800% or 80%?
800 is a tad tooooo much for my understanding. I don't know how much you had before, but it couldn't be that low (e.g. 200$ per year.)

A year ago I took out an umbrella policy for about $500. Then, when my daughter moved home and bought a car, we added her to the policy. My son turned 16, my wife totalled the van (her fault), and we bought two new cars. This year they want $4100.

This is a one time and very probably only time ever rebate and is associated with Florida's law changes to make doing business in the state more attractive for insurance companies. The main concern actually is home insurance and I understand that 80% of all the lawsuits in the whole country against insurance companies occur in FL. The legal firms ads on radio and TV reveal that FL is a happy hunting ground for lawyers.

Me, I changed insurance companies over a decade ago so I could drop hurricane insurance entirely. When that new company suddenly increased the bill by almost 300% and then dropped me the following year I elected to do without. I can do that because the house has been paid off for almost 20 years now. I am considering getting liability coverage only.

As for my cars, uninsured motorist coverage is not required in Florida and if I chose to buy it I'd pay over $2000 a year. The Florida Dept of Transportation says that 25% of all the drivers in the state have NO car insurance. And if they catch you without insurance they don't give you a ticket; they tow your car. An MD friend of mine had a 1972 Corvette he kept registered but since he did not drive it put no insurance on it; he was saving it to give to his son. One day he was pulled over for going 45 MPH in a 40 MPH zone (yes, really) and when they checked his license and found out he had ONE registered car at home with no insurance, told him he could not drive until that car-that-never-drove got insurance.

By the way my brother found out the hard way that there is no such thing as Unlicensed Driver Insurance. He had an accident with a guy who was driving a car that he did not own and who also had no driver's license. Both my brother's insurance company (GEICO) and the insurance company for the other car (Progressive) said that they did not cover that accident, even if you have Uninsured Motorist;s Coverage. I guess if you have an accident and the other guy does not have a license you need to kill him and hide the body.

They passed a new Law in FL that just went into effect. If you are caught speeding at over 120 MPH you do not get a ticket; you go straight to jail. I guess maybe then someone can bail you out, but I don't know. And if 120 MPH sounds too fast, there is a youtube video showing them pulling over a teenage girl who was clocked at 133 MPH. The only time I have ever gone as fast as that while at the controls of anything I was flying a USAF T-33A.

With a pilot licence ?

On this subject - does Saskatchewan still have government no fault vehicle insurance?

In the 60s I lived in Alberta but, like many others, registered and insured my vehicle in Sask because the total cost was less than insurance in Alberta.

With no salesmen, massive insurance offices with their overpaid staff, etc, Sask made a nice profit from vehicle insurance.

AFROTC Cadet in the back seat of the T-33A. We were doing about 240 kt which I think is the speed limit below 10,000 ft.
As an USAFA cadet, 1960, an orientation ride in a T-33 lasted only 30 min as other cadets were waiting in line. When I realized we had just turned on downwind, I commented to the pilot, "I had hoped we could do some aerobatics." The pilot immediately rolled the T-bird before the next turn. In later years, I have always wondered if he was written up.

Not an annoyance, of course!
