What Cheered You Up Today? (35 Viewers)

I used to have a Mi 24 Hind gunship game and also a AH-64 Apache one fir my first PC, loved them and wish i could play them again
You can, install dosbox on your PC.

Most is abandonware. You can download the stuff and use the iso file in dosbox. You don't even need a cd rom or diskette anymore.
Found it £3.35 !

Might have to buy it for the nostalgia 😁

Where is that?
Oulu in Finland

Working in my shop, I heard the sound of multiple round engines. Ran outside and there were four AT-6s practicing diamond formation. I watched nearly 1/2 hour as they disappeared over trees and I could tell by the props as they turned to circle back. An airshow like performance of turning and circling. Standing, watching, I enjoyed an old man type imagination to realize these same sounds were heard 80-85 years ago in Texas training fields. The sounds of the props and engines only T-6s make. One AT-6 turned back, flew over trying to get his smoke to work. It looked more like puffs from a steam train. He then turned and rejoined the other three who had also turned back. They then continued on towards home, calling it a day.

The very first time seeing aT-6, that I remember was 1948 or 49. We kids played in the corn fields behind the houses, when suddenly a T-6 flew over so low that we could see the pilot and his cloth helmet. That was the first time I heard that engine/prop combination sound. We lived reasonably close to the McDonnell plant at St. Louis, so there was some traffic, but to high to identify. One sighting from 1949 stayed in my memory till today. It took a couple years of being an aviation nut to realise I had seen the then new McDonnell FD-1. What had my attention in 49 was as he flew towards the plant I thought he was on fire due to the thick black exhaust. A trademark of McDonnell jet aircraft.

The black exhaust is a result of the engine, not the airframe.

Incidentally when they mandated the smokeless civil engines there were two undesirable outcomes. Firstly, on the JT8s, and probably other engines as well, the fuel consumption went up so in reality the "clean" engine was not as clean as the old smudge pots.

The second side effect was that you could no longer easily see the smudge pots in the circuit with you which made the see and be seen part of flying in the vicinity of airports more difficult and stressful.

So you are saying that a JT3D is more fuel effeciant than JT8D, I think I disagree with that statement by at least 20%, if you are talking about other early Jet or Turbofans let me know.
