What if:DB604 favored and works, enters service in 1942

Okay, back on track. Assuming that the DB604 is at 2000hp in 1942 (reaching 2500 by 1944), what do we see it in first, fighters or bombers? Could we see a FW190 with it by 1943?

I doubt it.

For reasons I don't understand RLM was determined to build the BMW 801 radial engine no matter how long the development period or how great the cost. Mass production of Fw-190A powered by BMW801 engine was just beginning during 1941. RLM isn't going to start over with an new engine and airframe a year later.

If Ju-88 night fighter and Do-217 bomber are cancelled it will free up additional BMW801 engines which might result in some additional Fw-190As and/or Fw-190Fs being produced. There will also be a few more DB603 engines available plus a pile of additional Jumo 213 engines during 1944 and 1945.

What? They immediately started working on a high altitude version the B, C, and D series all with different engine and settled on the Jumo 213 as their favored one, probably because the state owned Junkers.

Why would they cancel the Ju88 night fighter? The Do 217 should never have been produced IMHO.
Having a DB604 or Jumo 222 functional would mean that the Ju88 or 288 would have been an ideal night fighter given the desire to limit type proliferation.
Either engine could have been a massive boon to day and night fighters, not to mention various bombers, including having a Ju 288 in service or actually getting the He177A to work.

This is a large engine, It is quite comparable to a R-R Vulture in size/weight (within 10% or so). It is around 300lbs heavier than a Jumo 213 (about 15%) and a bit more than that over a DB 603. That is dry weight, radiators/oil coolers would be heavier and a prop capable of handling 2000-2500hp is going to be bigger/heavier than one for 1600-2000hp.
This engine could certainly be put in a fighter but it might be asking a bit much to put it in a 190 airframe. Or like the Ta 152, it starts as a 190 airframe but how much is left?
You can also kiss off any through the prop cannon armament.
