Well, that's 2,200+ 'as the bird flies,' and the P-40K had a 1,600 mile ferry range and the A6M2 had a 1,920 mile ferry range, so either there was a stopover not mentioned or someone didn't do the math! LOL
The Zero had the best combat radius (4-600 miles depending on source) of any early war fighter, unmatched until the P-38F model (500 mile combat radius) in 1942.
Stopover somewhere in British controlled territory, probably?
NARA was mentioned as the source but without details of the original document. An Internet search provided several pages with exactly the same wording, the oldest was 1999.
I wonder if the XP-50 variety should be included with the F5F? The turbos are the only difference, which would make it a variant available from late 1941 on. Those turbos would let it escort the B-24s at 25,000 feet.I'm going to add a new one I'll go with the old standby B-24 for my big plane, but for my fighter and attack plane, I'll go with the F5F. The XF5F first flew April 1, 1940. The F5F performs better than the Wildcat, and its two engines give it more upgrade capability, and. of course, it could operate from an aircraft carrier. Note, I would love to have some PBYs, but there can only be 2.
