A google image-search gave this, from Wiki, so take it for what it's worth:

The Naval Aircraft Factory TDN was an early unmanned combat aerial vehicle - referred to at the time as an "assault drone" - developed by the United States Navy's Naval Aircraft Factory during the Second World War. Developed and tested during 1942 and 1943, the design proved moderately successful, but development of improved drones saw the TDN-1 relegated to second-line duties, and none were used in operational service.

Off to read the rest of the article. Looks interesting!

I wonder what ship that is: twin funnel, painted centre-line, but a rivetted metal deck... Some sort of auxiliary carrier, perhaps?

Yep .. I agree. It is the USS Sable during the TDN-1 trials ...

And the USS Wolverine (IX-64) ... the four small funnels can be noticed ...

Fresh water aircraft carrier with limited speed on Lake Michigan... must have been fun landing a Corsair on that in winter...

Quick overview of Wiki article on Independence Class carriers.....would these be considered "Jeep Carriers"?

Independence was "light", hence CVL. Escort carriers (CVEs) were nicknamed "Jeeps".

CVLs were built on converted Cleveland-class light cruiser hulls, whereas CVEs were converted from or built upon merchant designs. CVLs could steam at fleet speeds of around 30 kts and carried around 36 aircraft. CVEs could manage 18 kts or so depending on design and sea-state, and carried fewer planes. CVLs were used with the 3rd/5th Fleet offensive carrier groups, while CVEs were used mainly for assault support, ferrying replacement aircraft, and in the Atlantic, flagshipping hunter-killer groups against U-boats.

Two distinct types, with equally-distinct designs and mission profiles.
