Listen to an opera teacher analyse metal singers and you'll realise that they're not that far apart.

Just check out Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. While not opera trained, he has managed to infuse an operatic vocal style that truly allows the kid all the way in the back of the arena or stadium to think Bruce is personally singing to him and him alone.
 
I think part of the issue is no-one has said what "Todays music" is.
There's probably a bigger variety than ever before.

There are great modern bands that have their own sound. Vampire Weekend or Grupo Fantasma span a large variety of sounds within their own oeuvre.

Hagen is a classical opera ex-ddr vovalist. Only the first album was very good. Played the record grey. Very tight band. Ever such a long time ago.
