Air cooled but still V-8s.

The Tatra 97 was the model that VW was alledged to have copied.
I will admit that the resemblance is uncanny, right down to it's flat-4 and transaxle.

There are parts of the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway that are incorporated into parks in Queens, N.Y. I have walked a few miles of the route of the Vanderbilt Cup, if the "Historic" NY State markers are correct. Thanks for bringing up pleasant memories.

Doing further reading I see that "rotary" means quite a different thing to Mazda engineers as opposed to Gnome-Rhone. Sorry about the confuzzlation. The block on the Mazda design doesn't itself rotate.

The "R-1800" came in two flavors - Wright R-1820 (e.g., B-17) and Pratt & Whitney R-1830 (e.g., B-24). The R-2600 was a Wright engine (e.g., B-25); the R-2800 was a P & W engine (e.g., P-47).

There are actually five. Intake and exhaust are extremely important and count in terms of overall efficiency of the unit as installed.
