Fall of Rome?
Bronze age collapse?
Which single event shaped the world so completely that we still feel it today?
Maybe the Viking invasion of anglo Saxon England?

We have to ignore religion as that would be an obvious answer.

... hard to argue with Marcel. ha ha ... :salute:
... but, more recently, adaptation to the most recent Ice Age ... the ice drove people (compressed society) to the high ground - Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.

Bronowski in "The Ascent of Man" mentioned a mutation of grasses that gave rise to todays crops, the seeds bound to the plant making them easier to cultivate and harvest, this allowed a surplus in agriculture which allowed cities and trade to grow. It also meant that the surplus had to be defended, so gave rise to walled cities like Jericho.

Dr Jakob didnt say it but I am sure it was mans first and most important piece of genetic engineering.
The agrarian revolution did lead directly to having surplus to make more beer. It likely was made earlier (mead would have been common), but when you've got more grain to play with, and more time available because you don't have to go out and forage, you've got the time and resources to experiment.
