There was a chubby US transport glider, the Laister-Kauffman CG-10, that was intended for the US invasion of Japan (which never materialized). More info is available at this Wikipedia article:

Wikipedia says the Ku-8 started off as a powered aircraft, the Kokusai Ki-59. This must be unusual, as most gliders with engines started started off as gliders.

Perhaps the oddest DC-3 variant was that of glider.
I think they made a prototype, then wiser heads prevailed.
The USN also had prototype amphibious (?) gliders made, to land in the surf and discharge their cargo (self-loading and otherwise) onto the beach. Again, wiser heads prevailed.

What was the intended mission for the Kokusai Ku-7 glider? You can't drop assault gliders into the jungle. Perhaps it's for resupply to otherwise cut off airfields?

Try telling that to the Chindits! Not everywhere is impenetrable jungle. There are clearings into which gliders can land.

Both the IJA and the IJN had parachute units in WW2. The IJA deployed parachute troops at Palembang in Feb 1942 to capture the airfields before seaborne landings took place. Gliders would have been useful for bringing in heavier equipment.

Ku-8 was developed in Dec 1941 by removing the engines and undercarriage from the Ki-59 light transport. Able to carry 20 troops or a mountain gun and crew.
Ku-7 remained experimental. Designed to carry 32 troops or an 8 ton tank, the Type 95 Ha-Go light tank.

There was also the Ki=105 Ohtori which was a powered version of the Ku-7. Prototypes in 1945 but plans for 300 to carry fuel oil from Sumatra to Japan came to nothing.
Britain was amassing an airborne corps in India in the summer of 1945. 2 divisions including both parachute & glider borne troops. Some 6 RAF glider squadrons were formed with CG-4A Hadrian gliders and Horsas were also to be on hand as well. A powered version of the Hamilcar, the Hamilcar X, was developed specifically for the Far East.
