The CAC CA-15 Kangaroo was an impressive design. This Australian aircraft design was a fine example of the pinnacle of piston aircraft.

The day I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the jig was up

Hi guys, I have a few questions about the long range of the P51 and the German reaction to it. I've included Goering's alleged quote as the title because I think it sheds some light on the German awareness of a fighter that had the range to fly to Berlin, engage in a dogfight, then fly back to...

    Italian fighters flight tests 1941

It may be of interest to know that on issue 109/2015 of “Ali Antiche” (“Old WIngs”, the magazine of GAVS, the Italian Historical Aircraft Friends Group: GAVS - Gruppo Amici Velivoli Storici - Magazine) an article was published, which describes a recently discovered document summing up the flight...

Would anybody be able to tell me, were German night fighters active over France in 1940-41?

    A Japanese Me-109

The link below provides a rare photo of a Me-109 used by Japan, with the mark of the Rising Sun emblazoned on the fuselage. Does anyone know if Japan used German fighters in combat? The link also features a selection of photos unimaginable for the High Command of the Luftwaffe at the beginning...

Two step pedals in RAF fighters

When did the RAF start equipping its Spitfires and Hurricanes with two step pedals to help counteract Blacking out during tight turns. I think they were standard from the factory by early 1941 but were they retro fitted to service fighters earlier.

    Italian fighters "Serie"

Could someone please explain the various "Serie" of the Italian fighters. For example, I see the Fiat G.55, Macchi C.205, and Reggiane Re.2005 referred to as "Serie 5" Italian fighters. What does "Serie 5" mean? Where there Serie 1 through 4? Thanks.

    Bv 141 vs Fw 189

Hello, I was wondering what advantages did the Bv 141 have over the Fw 189? Was it ultimately a better choice for the Luftwaffe going with the Fw 189? From what I've seen, the Fw 189 was superb in its role, and was even able to out turn attacking fighters. What if the LW went with the Bv 141?

Optimize the FW190 for the Eastern Front

Most Fw190s served against the Western Air Forces and new models were optimized for threats in the west that weighed down the fighters that ended up serving in the East. Heavier armor and armament for bomber killing affected all German fighters from 1942 on, but how could the Fw190 have been...

In 1942: top 3 Allied fighters

Same drill as in similar threads: what would be the top 3 land-based fighters available for Allies? Only the service machines qualify - no prototypes and one offs. Naval fighters can compete, but the ability to be used board the CV does not yield them any points. As always, the best blend of raw...

Sturmovik: how good was it really?

Pretty much what it says on the tin, was the Sturmovik really all that good or was it just a question of quantity having a quality all its own? I've read mixed things about it being poorly made and highly vulnerable and it was only the fact that Germany was forced to shift its air force to...

1935-42: Alternative fighters for the RAF allies

Premise of the thread: what kind of alternative fighters would you like to envision for design production in the UK, for the RAF, it's allies and export markets? By 'alternative', I mean the fighters that at 1st would not be dependable on the newest engines, whether in development or that are...
