U-2513 Type XXI U-Boat at Lisahally, 1945
Taken from the deck of U-3008, Type XXI U-Boat U-2513 at Lisahally, carrying artwork of the Statue of Liberty with a rainbow and what appears to be the name Eummler below. The SubMisEu was also know as the Rainbow divison which would explain the inclusion of the rainbow in the artwork. Note the U-Boat is also flying the Stars and Stripes.

U-2513 saw no patrols during the war, and surrendered on 9th of May 1945 at Horten, Norway. Transferred to Oslo on the 18th the boat departed on the 3rd June arriving at Lisahally on the 9th and was one of the first U-Boats there to be placed under US Navy control.

A year after its transfer to the United States in August 1946, U-2513 began an extensive overhaul in Charleston, South Carolina, which was completed late in September. On 24th September, she departed Charleston and headed for Key West, Florida and began six months of duty, which included both evaluation tests of the U-boat's design and duty in conjunction with the development of submarine and antisubmarine tactics. On 21st November 1946 President Harry S. Truman became the first American President to travel on a submarine when he visited U-2513. The sub went 440 feet (130 m) below the surface with the President on board, and a demonstration was made to him of the German schnorchel.

Retired from service in 1949 the boat ended its days being sunk west of Key West, Florida during rocket tests by the destroyer USS Robert A. Owens on 7 October 1951.

Type IXC, U-513....

U-513 was a type IXC U-boat built for service in Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II.

She was laid down on 26 May 1941 by the naval construction firm Deutsche Werft AG in Hamburg as yard number 309, and commissioned on 10 January 1942. Her commanders were Korvettenkapitän Rolf Rüggeberg (January 1942 to April 1943) and Korvettenkapitän Friedrich Guggenberger (15 May to 19 July 1943). Her training period was from 10 January 1942 to 31 August, as part of the 4th U-Boat Flotilla. She was then assigned to the 10th U-Boat Flotilla for operations.

She sank six ships with a total tonnage of 29,940 gross register ton (GRT) and damaged two more with a total tonnage of 13,177 GRT. The boat was a member of two wolfpacks. She was sunk by depth charges from a US aircraft in the South Atlantic Ocean in July 1943.

In 2011 after nine years research and two years of seagoing searches, the expedition led by the explorers of Schurmann Family located U-513, 85 km (46 nmi) east of their hometown of Florianópolis. The find was announced worldwide on 17 June 2011, when the Schürmanns produced images of a Side-scanning sonar. A dive was made in 2012, where photos and video images were recorded.
