Douglas-Tulsa B-24H-30-DT Liberator 42-51213 (704th BS, 446th BG, 8th AF) landed at Bulltofta Airfield, Malmon, Sweden on the 20th if June 1944, due to engines out on mission to Politz, Germany. All 10 crew interned in Sweden.
 
Bell-Atlanta B-29-15-BA Superfortress 42-63413 Delivered to USAAF on the 30th of August 1944.
Departed CONUS for PTO, arrived Saipan on the 29th of October 1944.
Named 'Dixie Darlin''. 497th BG, 871st BS, "Dixie Darling" ditched from unknown cause in Pacific Ocean on the 18th of December 1944 while on mission to Mitsubishi aircraft factory at Nagoya, Japan.
All 11 crew killed. Witnesses stated the aircraft made the normal turn toward home base after the bomb run, but was never seen again
 
Bell-Atlanta B-29-25-BA Superfortress 42-63513 Delivered to USAAF on the 30th of November 1944.
Assigned to 505th Bomb Group, 877th Bomb Squadron, 499th Bomb Group in January 1945.
Named 'Ramp Queen' (499th BG) MIA on the 26th of May 1945 on raid to Tokyo, Japan.
 
Martin-Omaha B-29-10-MO Superfortress 42-65213 Delivered to USAAF on the 29th of August 1944.
Departed CONUS for CBI 11Sep44. Named 'Carla Lani – Battle Baby' (462nd BG, 770th BS) disintegrated in midair over Lashani, China on the 7th of December 1944.
All 11 crew killed.
The aircraft was returning to India after a mission to Mukden, Manchuria. It had just taken off from Kiunglai, China on a ferry mission to Piardoba, India with 17 men on board. It started to pick up ice at 4,500 feet but continued to climb to an altitude of 10,600 feet. By this time the aircraft had picked up so much ice that it could climb no further. The pilot tried to make a turn to return to base at which time it went into a flat spin, and began to disintegrate in midair.
Official cause of accident listed as excessive icing conditions.
 
Douglas C-54A-15-DC Skymaster 42-72313, bought by Douglas Aircraft on the 20th of June 1946 and converted to DC-4, conversion No. 26. Bought by Pan American World Airways Mar 21, 1947 and registered as N88930.
Transferred to Avianca in March 1947 registered as C-135, reregistered as HK-135.
Crashed into Cerro Baco Mountain 290 km NE of Lima, Peru on the 23rd of June 1959 on flight between Bogota, Colombia to Lima, Peru. All 14 onboard killed.
 
Douglas C-54B-1-DC Skymaster 42-72413 bought by Transair Inc in 1946 as N69327.
Bought by Guest Aerovias Mexico in 1948 and registered as XA-HER.
Modern Air Transport bought it in 1948 and registered as N1695M.
Curtis Reid Flying Services bought it Apr 1950 and registered as CF-EDN named "Canadian Pilgrim".
Crashed in the Alps near Grenoble, France on the 13th of November 1950 when strayed 50 mi off course while on flight to Paris.
52 killed.
 
Consolidated B-24D-155-CO Liberator 42-72813 (44 BG, 66 BS, 8th AF) shot down by Fw 190A-6 flown by Uffz Hans Ruppert of JG 26/1 on the 21st of January 1944, and crashed at equennes, 3 km Sw of Piox de la Somme, France. 9 crew killed, 1 crewman bailed out and evaded capture.
 
Consolidated B-24J-1-CO Liberator 42-73013 (431st BS, 11th BG) crash-landed on reef off Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands after attack by enemy aircraft the 29th of December 1943. Crew apparently captured but never heard from again.
The wreck is still there.
 


Its March 29th 1976 a few more days left of the Erie Lackawanna.
We saw this eastbound going under I-80 and raced to Griffith at high speeds to get this shot of four E-units crossing Cline Ave.
My long time friend Steve Smedley at the far right in the white shirt was lucky enough to get out of the car in time.
This was his first time ever shooting on the real main line of the Erie a few days before it all ended....
