I have a colour photo of UA4 and some more Skyraiders from VU-1:

I might be wrong but IMHO those planes are drone directors, not target tows. Thus the long range tanks. There is a camera-pod attached to the tip of the F6F wing. Pods like this one have been used on drones, some of them maned.
