Airman 1st Class
from the afternoon of April 25, the very hard battle for Tempelhof airport, mainly defended by the remains of the Muncheberg Panzer-Division, left with very few tanks, reinforced with anti-aircraft units of the Luftwaffe and SS units; General Mummert directed the defense from the command post located directly at the airport.
The assault was launched by General Čujkov's 8th Guard Army with the support of armored units from General Katukov's 1st Guard Armored Army; two Soviet rifle divisions, the 39th and 79th Guards, tried to bypass the airport to the east and west while the tanks advanced from the south.
The Muncheberg Panzer-Division defended itself well and the clashes continued in the airport buildings and in the midst of the wrecked aircraft carcasses on the runways.
