.... Brrrr but the Aussie markings ????

IIRC , these aren't the Aussie markings. The FAA used them in 1944 when stared addopting the American practice of removing of the red colour in the national markings for the planes servicing in the FFA squadrons in the Pacific and the Far East Fleets.

When the C-141 production completed Lockheed proposed a bomber version and asked the USAF what it wanted to do with the tooling, which was Air Force property. Lockheed offered to store the tooling for a price, but it was Obvious to everyone that the C-5A was the wave of the future so the tooling was destroyed. Boy, what a mistake they made! The C-5A cost so much that the USAF could not buy as many as they wanted, but it was too late to buy more 141's. Lockheed soon realized they could have sold quite a few 141's to foreign countries had they retained the capability to produce them. Of course eventually the C-5B went into production, over a decade later, and the C-141B modification upped the airlift capability of that fleet. But the C-141A was a real handy airplane, rather like a jet C-130, and very reliable. Seeing three of then tucked into a tight V-formation, zigging and zagging down low was an unusual sight.
