I like it too! A great centerpiece for a diorama, me thinks. I too noticed the grey area on the upper wing. I just assumed it was new doping for the cloth skinned wing?
 
I was thinking the same re the diorama Matt, maybe with a 'Jeep' and a tent. The kit comes with a nicely moulded, standing pilot figure, wearing a 'A1' leather jacket and sunglasses!

Not that I know of. I've flown a couple of Cubs, and the aileron set-up was 'normal' (and great for short-field landings when side-slipping!).
I guess the modeller, as good as he is, has a limited knowledge of aircraft control surfaces - not uncommon in certain sectors of modelling, be it vehicles, aircraft, ships etc.
