Airfix 1/72nd MKI Avro Lancaster G-George. a model made by Ian Collis
So we didn't want it to resemble G-George as can be seen in the Australian War Memorial (AWM) museum today, but instead we went for how it was based on the B/W photo as it was in service with the same bomb run on the nose. Lanc is made from the 1978 2nd tooling version on black sprues Airfix kit and is supposed to be a MK1 but infact need's work on it to make it so. Mods needed to Airfix kit to make it a MK1 was the bomb aimer's blister as a MKI has the shallow nose blister, all late and MKIII Lancasters have the large nose blister. Then it needed windows to be cut into the fuselage aircraft's main body section. Also too, missing in the kit, a few more extra detailed parts are on this model, Blind pole approach [on the fuselage] - Balance weights [on fins] - Early type antenna [on cockpit] - aileron linkage arms [on main wings] - balance weights [on rear wings] - resin machine guns and added the missing gun breaches - resin wheels - 1,000lb bombs - Photo Etched seat belts. added glycol jets to front nose, as again not in the kit. Whiteish exhaust staining and weathered.

Nicely done by Ian, and good photography. I'd need to check, but as far as I know, the earlier antenna mast was a tubular 'fairlead' internally, housing a whip antenna for the 'Gee', which protruded from the canopy. Can't recall seeing an external mast, but I could be wrong !

The antenna looks much thicker in the pictures Terry.

Zoom in on George.

I guessed that might be the case when I went back for a second look Ian, and I also reminded myself it's 1/72nd scale, so there's limitations to the possibilities of stretched sprue.
BTW, which plans are they?
