This is my favourite line in the paper.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for "courage" in the region

If Putin is calling for courage, it tells you what is missing from the region, and what is likely to be happening

When the Tzar doesn't like to hear ''bad'' news, but prefers to live in his own fictional reality:

''...Gerasimov and top officials seemingly dismissed intelligence warnings that Ukrainian soldiers were gathering near the border with Russia's western Kursk region as much as two weeks before they began the assault, and nobody briefed President Vladimir Putin, according to a person close to the Kremlin. Defensive forces inside Russia were caught off guard and offered little initial resistance to the Ukrainian advance...''

''...Gerasimov oversaw Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 that was meant to last for days and is now deep into its third year with huge Russian casualties...''

After reading that in full, I have to admit my asserting it was only a raid (to A Admiral Beez ) was wrong. It may be a recon-in-force, or a spoiling attack, or a play for a bargaining chip. If they're laying in a logistics train, this is not shoot'n'scoot, in any event.

That is what they want you to believe. The actual plan is to take Crimea

An excellent assessment of the Kursk Oblast incursion

Also note that ISW is fully respecting Ukrainian Military OpSec.

Radio Free Europe reporting Ukraine is now occupying about 600 sq km of Russian territory in Kursk Oblast. To put that into context, Russia has managed to capture just 567 sq km of Ukrainian territory in the past five months, and 775 sq km since November 2023.

Just to add - there's open source intelligence confirming that elements of at least four Ukrainian brigades are involved in this attack, along with the Georgian legion and various SoF groups. Russians are reported as having identified elements from anther two.

Further to that, support forces have been identified from another two brigades. Another four to six are tentatively identified as in reserve or stationed on the border in the area.

That means that elements of at least 8 brigades and possibly as many as 16 are involved in the Kursk attack.

Given that Ukraine reportedly only has about 75 to 85 active brigades, that's a huge chunk of it's firepower.

If there was ever a time for Georgia and Moldova to rise up and forcibly expel Russian-backed rebels and retake their territory, it's now. Russia has no aid to send.

And now Kursk itself is threatened. Putin may wonder if the ghost of the Kursker knights has cursed him.
