Thanks to Shinpachi and Sys for the info in this thread. Great stuff.

But what is this great battle they are talking about or is it a generalization of the air battles at that time?
 
Lt. Stone's P-40 was found in February, 2009.
According to Ryan's explanation, the impact of crash was so hard that the plane would have been broken into pieces. They found a crankshaft and some other small parts but not the pilot's remains. The P-40 crash site was 200 meters below the Japanese plane. Search for his remains still continues.
