04-04-1943 Sunday Beaufighter JL885 143sqn North Coates At 0700hrs this aircraft crashed whilst attempting to take off downwind, crewed by 2 non-aircrew airmen trying to escape from North Coates out of frustration with the intention of flying to Eire to escape the war. The aircraft was written off when it crashed before becoming airborne, and the airmen, AC2 J C Robinson & LAC R Walton were both uninjured but were detained pending Court Martial for stealing the aircraft.
A severe prison term I would think. Not only stealing His Majesty's aircraft, and wrecking it (!), but also incorrect runway use, ignoring airfield SOPs, unqualified use of equipment etc etc ....... and causing the crash crews to deploy and use expensive fire suppressant !
