I have built up the sides of the cockpit with styrene strip. This will be sanded to fit the canopy

Can't work out what the underside was painted. Grey, sky or silver I am guessing that silver would have been unpolished metal.

Went through a few books and they look like they were either IJA Grey or silverish

In all pics of Ki-100 the wheel bays look dark. It may indicate that these were of either the top camo colour or the same that was used for the fuselage interior. The Aodake Iro is also possible.

Had a bit of trouble trying to blend the wing root with the fuselage at the trailing edge. I have lost a bit of detail but I am getting there just 5 more coats of filler and an hour of sanding

It helps that it's a handsome little bird. One of the best looking Japanese aircraft.

You think to yourself I have done a good job filling joints and sanding down.

Then you give it a coat of grey primer and suddenly it's got flaws everywhere

Humm.. some of trouble then. I would apply some of the primer more at these areas where the flaws appeared. Just to seal them.

And hence one of the reasons for a primer coat. I sometimes apply primer 3 or 4 times before the finish works for me.

Oh nooooooo I have managed to push the right hand exhaust pipe moulding inside the fuselage and there's no big enough hole to get it out. Going to have to chop a hole to rescue it.

Wahey I have rescued it luckily I hadn't fitted the oil cooler so I cut a hole that will be covered.

It's glued back in place with lots of CA superglue.

Glad you were able to rescue it - I was going to suggest using tube, or plastic rod drilled out.
It's looking good.
