The "R" letter is not a tank number but a single letter identifying the platoon. The actual letter, its size and style were left up to the platoon commander who used the first letter of his last name usually. The name of the tank also applied on the turret is unsighted by the German soldiers. The tank number was applied on the side door mostly and now not visible because the door are open.
