Wehrmacht Dänemark Esbjerg General Erwin Rommel PKW Wimpel Hotel Royal
In November 1943, Erwin Rommel was ordered to inspect the Atlantic Wall - the German coastal defense - and to strengthen it where necessary. He soon deemed it necessary to build a bunker complex near Esbjerg, which was started in 1944.
The Tirpitz position would include four 380mm guns, which would cover the sea route to Esbjerg. The guns had a range of 42 to 45 kilometers. The scaffolding consisted of 6000 m³ of concrete.
The Germans never completed the Tirpitz position and the guns were never installed. At the end of the Second World War, four guns were located at the Guldager railway station, between Varde and Esbjerg. They could not be transported further because the bridge in Varde could not support the weight of 110 tons.
