D'oh!That is the Lockheed XP-49.
There were two variants of the P-38:
The XP-49, which was to be a high altitude variant powered by hyper engines - one built.
The XP-58, which was to be a long range heavy fighter also powered by hyper engines. This project was plagued by the Army changing armament and mission - one built.

lol thanks! I guess when one has looked at as many "period" WW II photos as I (we all) have, sometimes things just don't look quite right!Good eyes! I never would have noticed.
