Those are Ferry Tanks developed in early 1943 for both the P51A and A-36. They were adaptable to B&D but development of the 150gal combat tank rendered them obsolete.

At the time NAA designed and built (subcontrated), only the new 60gal combat tank had passed Materiel Command testing with contracts our for production..

That's (most probably) P-51B GQ-T or (earlier) GQ-G 43-6638 from the 10thTRG. I had never seen an image of the starboard side ! Thanks !
354th FG 355th FS. I've seen that photo before and thought it was a reversed image (victory markings on starboard) until I looked at the canopy opening. I wonder if it might have been re-marked for some publicity shots. I also have a photo of that same sharkmouth with the squadron codes of GQ-H in full D-Day stripes. Could it be that the painted sharkmouth panels were moved between several planes in turn?
