Supermarine actually did have a turret fighter design at the time they were designing the prototype Spitfire. The Type 305 was basically the Spit design with a turret similar to your picture. The RAF went with the Defiant and it never got off the drawing board which probably saved Supermarine some embarrassment seeing how well turret fighter concept worked out.
