you can definitely see the yellow under-engine. many times in B/W pics the yellow almost appears as black.

Very interesting photo, these are definitely A-3's or earlier and they certainly seem to be operational but there's no geschwader or staffel markings or even camouflage, seems almost like they've been left in NMF and still showing factory marking on the cowling. Anyone know the context or background story of this pic?

As memo serves these are the first Wurgers of the first ordered batch of 40 Fw 190A-0 pre-series planes ( 28 built only ). The Fw 190 prototypes were powered by the BMW 801C0 initially, later beginning the W.Nr 0010 with the BMW 801C1 . Therefore the foreground Fw 190 has the C1 on the engine cowling. The Werk Nummer is 0010 and just indicates the first aircraft of the series. The pre-series Wurgers were painted either with the RLM 02 overall or the RLM74/75/76 colours. A couple of them got the red rudders. Actually these weren't used operationally but in March 1941 the trial unit was created in Rechlin-Roggenthin to gather the experiences in using of the plane. The unit was equipped with the six Wurgers. Most of the A-0s were rebuilt/modified for many different tests. Finally 50 modifications had been introduced before the mass production started.
