Development of the Hawker aircraft started in 1943 with the initial flight of the Fury being September 1944 and the Sea Fury in February 1945.
Australia was one of three Commonwealth nations to operate the Sea Fury, with the others being Canada and Pakistan. The first batch of 25 Sea Fury's for Australia embarked in April 1949 on the newly built and commissioned carrier HMAS Sydney and were allocated to 805 Squadron of the ANFAA (Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm) was only formed in 1948.

My subject, WH587 was delivered aboard HMAS Vengeance in March 1952 and served with the squadron in Korea and at home until being struck off charge in September 1963. The aircraft went on to serve as a racer in the USA, based at Fresno, then passed into the hands of the Ellsworth Hovey Getchell Foundation in about December 1976. It is my belief that the aircraft is still with the foundation.

Thank you gents, I'm looking forward to doing it. Sprue washing day today, maybe a little start tomorrow then its off to Melbourne for a few days. :D

Thanks for the interest and encouraging words gents.

I made a start today doing a lot of part checking against the PE enhancements so I have been snipping and scraping a lot. One thing I did spend a lot of time on was the wheel bay resin main part, it's quite a bit thicker than the kit part and needed some work to thin the back down as much as I could. It was Dremel and face-mask time but we got there in the end. What I'm showing below is the test fitting to ensure the wing join seams sit nicely with this great lump of resin tucked under them.

As you can see a nice bit of small detail is hidden in here. I'm also none to sure of colour. Airfix say 74 Linen which I think would be there close interpretation of chromate yellow. I have seen chromate, silver and light grey in the wheel bay but am inclined to plumb for chromate in the bay and light grey for the undercarriage and the doors. If anybody has good info to input on this score, it would be much appreciated.

As you can see I've worked it down very close here, the base is now wafer thin and in a couple of places, thin air.

A lot of blue tape and a test run which I was pleased with.

Hi Vic, there's some nice images of restored Sea Furies over on Britmodeler in their walk around section. There are shots of the undercarriage bays of two examples both different colours. I'm partially colour blind so I can't say for certain what they are!

Many thanks Andy and also Greg, I'll be checking Britmodeller out again, I did find one on there site and I'm sure it was chromeate yellow. :thumbright: :D

It will be on hold for a while now Bill, just back from the big city down south with the paint I need for the other build, so going to concentrate on that one. :D
