Been very busy with other things sp very little has been done since the last update. Two weeks ago I found some time to make a little jig to cut the dozens of little Dzus spring plates that were omitted from the resin castings. Inspiration and ideas copied from the build link posted upthread.

Many more are yet to be made and stuck on and the jury is still out for me on the results. I may need to sand them down a bit before painting all this.

As things are winding down a bit now I hope to get a bit more bench time to push this model forward. Thanks for your patience.

OK class, let's focus.

So one of the things that was bugging me was some inconsistent details on the engine cowls. Yes, the resin stuff is nice but it turns out there are some faults. Today I finished studying photos of various P.R. XVIs (not a lot of good ones) and other 2-stage merlin types and came up with the below chart for the various bits to help me understand and rectify the needed details.

The bottom line is, I need to do the following to make this subject reasonably accurate:

1. Add the intercooler vent fairing on top of both cowls
2. Remove the 4 small scoops under the magneto cooling ducts on the resin parts. The scoops are for cooling the fuel pumps and there's only 1 per side and they are much farther back on the XVI. It appears the designer of the resin part used the "P.R. XVI" at Dayton but this isn't really a XVI. it's a B.35 (RS709) painted to look like a XVI.

I also have to check reference pics of my chosen subject to confirm what side these were on as they seem to move around or disappear altogether!
3. Continue with the cowl fasteners but they'll need to be thinned down to look more convincing.
4. Scribe in the coolant tank access doors, omitted on the resin bits.
5. Fill in the access doors for the jacking/picketing eyes on the inboard nacelle faces. Not the resin's fault but wrong on the Tamiya moulding.
6. Add the accessories tank drains.

Another thing I noticed was that the Tamiya spinner diameters are much larger than the corresponding face on the resin bits. So which is right? Fortunately I have drawings for the spinners and they are 32.4 inches diameter at the rear face. The resin parts scale bang on - the Tamiya spinners are too big by about a millimeter. This is a relief as it's easier to reduce the spinner diameter than add plastic to the resin parts.

That all being said, there has been other progress as you can see below. Cockpit bits are assembled but not painted. Same with the undercarriage. For this, I deviated from the instructions by not installing the wheels on the axles and pinching them between the struts. I'll add these later by drilling the bosses and installing brass axles so I can paint the assembly more easily.

See ya later.
