On Aug 26, 2021 near Kabul airport, Afghanistan – Maj. Annamaria Tribuna, Italian Air Force officer and pilot in command of the Lockheed C-130J Super Hercules, took courageous actions to protect the lives of her crew and 98 Afghan refugees on board. After take-off Maj. Tribuna's C-130J came under heavy fire from the mountains surrounding Kabul airport. Without hesitation she implemented difficult and perilous evasive maneuvers at a low altitude while deploying anti-missile decoys. On board, everyone understood that something serious was happening. Courageously, this pilot engaged in actions to protect her crew and passengers. She will be honored by the City of Palermo.
