I ran across a October 2000 issue of Aeroplane that has the attached photo. On 27 Jan 1948 Spitfire PR.XI PL983 was loaned to the USA for use by the American Civil Air Attache as N74138. On 15 Aug 1948 the aircraft was used by Lettice Curtis, flying on behalf of the air attache, Tony Satterthwaite, to win the Wiltshire Flying Club handicap race.

 
I wonder if there was a passenger seat by that porthole window?

Let me re-phrase this: Was there a passenger seat by that Spitfire's porthole window to the rear and below of the pilot's seat?
