What do people have against the P-39?
I don't think people really have something against the P-39 (see Snautzer01 Snautzer01 , I could find the dash on my computer laptop ). The aircraft was an early ww2 fighter, that had it's good parts and it's flaws like all aircraft of that era to be honest.
I think it's more the way it was discussed that turned this thread into a running meme. We have more of those, the "Color for a model I am building" is another famous one. They tend to run for years. We let them run as it's usually just some harmless banter and good fun.

If my memory is correct, we had multiple threads either about the P-39 or which crept into P-39 territory where the resident "expert" stated the same things over and over again.

This thread was an attempt to capture all those discussions in one place rather than having them repeated ad nauseam across multiple threads. It was the repetitious arguments that led to the "groundhog" part of the thread title (as in the 1993 Bill Murray movie).

The key challenge seemed to be that the "expert" didn't understand some of the basics of aircraft design, nor that performance graphs for aircraft from different countries (or even different years) couldn't be directly compared due to differing test conditions (e.g. under what fuel and weapon load was the test conducted).

I like the P-39. It's quirky and quite advanced-looking for its vintage. That said, it had flaws which were essentially ignored by the "expert" while he drew incorrect conclusions because he misinterpreted data or misrepresented facts. For all that, he was always polite and courteous. I just wish he would have been more open to learning from other members rather than feeling the need to argue topics that he didn't really understand.

I will also add, that one of the benefits of this forum is how much discussions like his have added to my own understanding about aircraft that I had limited knowledge. In the right environment and use, the P-39/P-63 was a good aircraft and I have nothing against it. It just helps to understand its strengths and weaknesses.
