Bureau of Areonautics Aer-E-2571-BP/001085 of 5 Jan, 1942 changed the size and color of the national insignia blue to dark non-spectacular blue, changed from Aer-E-25-HY,Feb 26 1941, where the blue was just noted as non-spectacular blue. The location was to be aproximately 1/3 distance from wing tip to fuselage, and to be as large as possible without being on the ailerons. The order of 5 Jan '42 also reinstated rudder stripes on all Navy aircraft. This was changed on 6 May, 1942 in Alnav #97 Secnav, no red to be used anywhere on Navy aircraft to eliminate any chance of being misidentified as Japanese. So no more red dots or rudder stripes on any aircraft presumably at the latest 8 May, 1942 as this was a direct order from the Secretary of the Navy.
