Trust the British to come up with an imaginative concept to the problem of climb rate, when all those other boring engineers were just putting bigger engines on their planes.

That's the British for you, thinking so far out of the box they've made another box altogether to think in and placed it at the opposite end of the room...

Mind you, this is what the Germans came up with, and it had a wooden wing and fabric covered control surfaces...
