Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort, Holland

While I'm an old-aircraft fan (obviously), my 8-year old son Robin is really into cars. So last year we went to the airshow in Oostwold (for me) and now it was his turn and we went to the historic Grand Prix at the former F1-circuit at Zandvoort. Great day, sun in our back, the wind in our hair and big roaring engines in front of us. There were many races, Formula 1 from different era's, old sports cars, you name it. We had great fun and as I know there are a few petrol-heads among you, I thought it would be nice to let you share in the fun with these pictures:

Safety wasn't probably the best, but at least they look and sound like real cars!

Well, zandvoort is in the dunes, directly at the seaside. It's a very good setting. We just climbed a dune and were looking down on the action, next to the Tarzan corner. This 180 degrees corner is located at the end of a large straight part, so cars come arrive there at high speed and have to go in a slow corner. Best place to see some action happening, overtaking, cars missing the corner etc.

Great stuff Marcel. I flew over Zandvoort a couple of years back, and often wondered if it was still used. Pity it lost its F1 status all those years ago - got happy memories of one of the last GPs held there.

You've been to that GP Terry?

Oh yes, Zandvoort is still used. The DTM has a race on this track and so does the Formula 3.

More great stuff Marcel, and I also like the GT40s (one of my favourite cars), and those little Fiat Arbarths - they were great to watch.
Yes, I got to the GP, I think 1969, maybe 1970 - can't remember which ones I did and when, as I also did the Spa GP in one of those years, and can never remember which one was which year!

Ah that must have been great. The Formula 1 was still raw and honest back then. I went to Magnicourt GP in 2000 but I thought it was too commercial.

Yes, those were the days, as they say!
I followed F1 off and on until around four or five years ago, and just lost interest (although I used to compete at the bottom level of stage rallies - more interesting). As you say, far too commercial nowadays, and more like a parade of who's technology beats the other guys. Doesn't compare to seeing Graham Hill in the Lotus 49B, or Jackie Stewart in the BRM or Matra, and the orange McClarens, red Ferraris and so on, all competitors driving manually operated cars.

+1 on the older generation F1's,no KERS,traction control,semi auto trannies etc. just alot of pure skill....Great pics.....
