On Sun. Jan 30th The family had arranged to meet at Trebah gardens on the South coast. After lunch myself and the OH went to collect the dogs from the car and join the folks for a stroll round the gardens, unfortunately we missed each other and so Deb and I ended up going round by ourselves.
It turns out Trebah was used as an embarkation point for the 175th combat team of the 29th. Infantry division on June 1st. 1944 on their way to Omaha
beach on D day. The beach was concreted over and the gardens were turned into an ammunition dump which was attacked unsuccessfully by the Luftwaffe.
The house and gardens were bought in 1981 by Major Tony Hibbert and his wife.
Major (Ret.) Hibbert was the C.O. of the force of 500 commandos sent to capture the port of Kiel on May 1st.1945 to prevent it being taken by the Russians who then intended to take Denmark and Norway. Leading to WWIII starting before WWII had ended. He led the mission from a jeep as his leg was in plaster after being wounded during the Arnhem operation
