A castle in my neighborhood. As a supplement to SInpachi's thread Totally different castle, though. 7 centuries old, this castle controls a junction of big rivers near Gorichum. 300 years ago, the outer walls have been replaced by fortress dykes but the main building is still original as it was in the 15th century. It is, what we call in the NL a 'Burcht', a heavily defended knight's castle. Later when it became a fort, the castle was part of the old 'Waterlinie', the main defence line in the Netherlands. It still had a military function in the 20th century untill the Waterlinie was abandoned in the '50ies.
The castle is famous for the escape of a VIP prisoner called Hugo de Groot. He escaped in a big chest in 1621 during political struggles between the Orange-family (now our royal family) and more modern thinkers.
You can visits the castle and walk on the walls. It is great for kids as they can play on the outer walls and games are provided.

While we were there, there was a photo shoot for a biker magazine. The photographer kindly allowed Kiran to sit on the bike. He loved it, waving his toy revolver around
