You had to ask?
I have been laughing at the coverage of this. At the start UK coverage was disapproving of the "authoritarian approach", then then when it spread they started saying the Chinese were not authoritarian enough quickly enough. It seems that taking steps to cope with something causes more concern than saying "nothing to see here folks". The idiots in UK seem to think quarantine is a voluntary holiday that you can opt out of, sorry guys that isn't how it works. Just after the war my mother in law had to go to the hospital gate to see if her son was still alive. No one allowed in or out, you were either given a live relative back or their name was on the list of the dead at the gate. It is a virus that kills about 2% of those infected, an issue but not the black death.

Well now will get Zipper throw out his conspiracy theories about how the military is going to drive through American towns rounding up citizens and they will disappear to concentration, er I mean quarantine camps and never be seen again.

And then Mikewint will do the same and tie chemtrails and the flat earth into it.

Again thanks for asking about his concerns. I blame you... :D

To ensure the correct tone to the discussion all sentences must contain at least two but no more than four of the following words/phrases. pandemic, epicentre, infected, killer virus, ground zero, arrested, forcibly detained, cover up, clamp down, dead, morbidity, relentless spread, no vaccine, helpless, powerless panic and ineffective.

About the same as the 1918 influenza pandemic.
The problem is that it is easily transmitted, one estimate that I read say at worst it could infect 60% of the population. That's 84 million dead. Even if you halve the estimates, that's a lot of dead people.

Interestingly, Bubonic Plague has a mortality rate of 1-15%, so it is in the ballpark of 'the black death'

As well as very long copy and pasted paragraphs.

The NZ quarantine facility isn't too far from a holiday camp - sea views, nice facilities... Coronavirus: Wuhan evacuees 'living in vans' in Whangaparāoa

Yes, but people die from "flu" every year about 60,000 in UK on average usually the old or ill from other things. Most suspected cases have turned out to be flu. The death rates appear to be different depending on the level of care.

Check out this masterpiece it starts slow and ends in full on hysteria. . FYI In UK like most countries medical authorities are not obliged to divulge anyones identity without their permission to anyone without good reason, the people who needed to know knew, the name is less important than the seat no on the plane and the chalet number in his ski resort. From the Daily Mail my bold.

The first case of the killer coronavirus has been confirmed in London, with a woman who flew into the capital from China currently being treated at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital in south London (left). Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England confirmed the case: 'One further patient in England has tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total number of cases in the UK to nine (right). This virus was passed on in China and the patient has now been transferred to a specialist NHS centre at Guy's and St Thomas' in London.' The case could trigger panic in the capital, with authorities expected to try and hunt down anyone the infected person may have been in contact with. It comes after the illness gripped Brighton, with two city health centres (the County Oak Medical Centre pictured being cleaned inset) closed, a care home placed on lockdown and children at one primary school told they can stay at home after two GPs became confirmed cases and a teacher was quarantined. The spread of the disease has sparked panic in the south coast city, where residents have accused public health officials of 'losing control' by 'intentionally hiding' information about 'super spreader' Steve Walsh including his identity and exact movements since he came home on January 28.

But, if it's more easily transmitted, as this appears to be, then that leads to more deaths.
And, in the Southern hemisphere at least, if it reaches peak at around the same time as flu, then who knows what the combined effects will be.

Hmm - maybe I'd better not order a Special Chow Mein from the local take away ......................

Well duh...
We do. The flu vaccine is approx. 40% effective. It does not cover all the strains.
Somehow I didn't really picture you as a pro-plaguer… :)
Luckily it's more effective here, I guess we're 6 months behind your season, so know what strains to expect.
