Minor point: there were no shuttle missions to Moscow but 8th and 15th AFs did fly round-trips into Russia during the summer of 44.

The 4th had extremely heavy attrition among its leading aces. I was the assn. secretary in the 80s and 90s and only knew one: Jim Goodson. Gentile, Godfrey, Beeson, and so many others died young. When Blakeslee died in 08 I got a call from the NY Times obit desk requesting some insight but unfortunately I never met "Colonel Don."

BTW: Grover C. Hall's "One Thousand Destroyed" remains perhaps the finest non-unit-history among all unit histories!
