Rob
I have been in the aviation industry since February 1962 and doing restorations since 1963.

Using modern definitions, Schematics are a representation of the elements of a system using abstract graphic symbols rather than realistic pictures. A schematic usually omits all details that are not relevant to the key information the schematic is intended to convey, and may include oversimplified elements in order to make this essential meaning easier to grasp.

Using the approximate WW2 definition. Schematics are a representation of the interrelated parts of a system using abstract pictures. A schematic usually omits all details that are not relevant to the key information the schematic is intended to convey, and may include oversimplified elements in order to make this essential meaning easier to grasp.

These are typical P-51 schematics.

This is a Technical Drawing, previously known as a Blueprint and never as a Schematic. This particular part was used in most NAA aircraft starting with the NA-19 (BT-9) through to the P-51. It was superseded by the almost identical standard part 2C25 in May 43 and continued in use for years on many aircraft.

No sweat. We all make mistakes, you with the post and me with the interpretation of your post.

It needed saying anyway as the number of people who mistake the various terms is very large - though thankfully not as large as the group that think part numbers are called serial numbers.

If you are doing research on NAA Design drawings, you should obtain a copy of NA-106 drawing 106-000002 "P-51D Major Assem. Breakdown". AeroLibrary (my phrase for aircorpslibrary.com) has this. EDIT

On the drawing is a Work Breakdown 'tree' of 106-00002 Airplane Assem. Under this block are all the major design groupings NAA used to provide an engineer a roadmap to seek Installation, Assembly, Detail parts for Wing Group; Landing Gear; Electrical Wiring; Instruments; Fuselage Forward; Fuselage Aft; Bomb Rack; Radio Equipmen; Power Plant and Hydraulic Systems.

Below the top Installation blocks above, are the individual installations and assemblies top drawings which make up a completed major Installation (i.e.. Wing, Aileron, Flaps, Armament Mounts, Landing Lights, etc).

ALL Major US airframe companies used a 'similar' scheme for the Major Assembly Breakdowns, but few were as well organzed and consistent in scheme. I found Lockheed and Republic both to be much more difficult to research. This drawing was dated 15 March 1943 when the P-51D 'concept' began as six gun, birdcage canopy extension of NA-104 P-51B-5-NA and morphed to six gun, 'cokpit enclosure, sliding' bubble canopy by the eend of July. As you research the P-51D drawing changes which paralleled discussions between NAA and Materiel Command, you will see illustrations of both, then the revisions on 106-9000002 to reflect the changes (i.e. Aft Frame of P-51B-5 (NA-104) as rear deck was modified, framed canopy replaced by sliding bubble canopy) which are shown as installation drawings with 'dotted' lines for the 'older P-51B installations'.

I am not familiar with Aerolibrary as I do not use Farsebook but AirCorps Library has what is probably similar material. This shows a selection of the airframes they cover

North American had a similar but simplified chart in the front of many of their manuals going back at least to the T-6 series (and CAC in Aus had the same thing in some CA-1 Wirraway manuals circa 1938/39) but the more interesting charts to me are the ones in Tech Order 01-60-3, Structural Repair Instructions for A-36 Series and P-51, 15-June-1945 as it shows the growth of the aircraft through the series starting with the Mustang 1 where every major assembly has a 73- prefix through the D where there is a mix of 73, 97, 99, 102, and 106 numbers. What is not reflected in these charts however are the 19- (BT-9) and similar numbers that flowed through to the P-51 and other aircraft like B-25 though these do show up in the stock lists (this one is post war so does not show the BC and BT models)

North American P-51B, which was the initial version of P-51D, has public free Drawings on scribd, and the drawing documents came from an account that promotes sale for a trader, not any book. That's fantastic!

The trader had many historical electronic documents, and uploaded P-51B drawings on scribd for download, to sell his other documents.

Note: Drawing 435-442 of the 522 Drawings were missing.

Did you get the authors permission to download? Just because you pay a site to be able to download does not make it legal unless you have the original authors permission
Many accounts that share documents on scribd, such as avilogs official account, were the accounts of the original author as an advertisement to promote sale, and I think in this case the downloads're completely legal.
The traders such as avilogs share those documents on scribd just to promote sales for themselves.

Just a test. drgondog drgondog Did you give permission to post this book on "scribd"? If so, I'll shut up

Good test, but the drawings had nothing to do with the book, and the drawing documents came from an account that promotes sale for a trader, not the book.

The trader had many historical electronic documents, and uploaded P-51B drawings on scribd for download, to sell his other documents.
