Have a different text for this particular a/c - that it is a Ki-44II-Ko (or a). It could have been a prototype for the II series but not for III IMHO. AFAIK only a Ki-44 III experimental a/c has been produced with a Ha-145 18-cylinder engine.

Haven't seen this strange mask before. I must tell you, I was thinking it's an AI-BS. It is not - read the description at the bottom:

It's October 15, 1936 as per detailed photo information.
And the disease mentioned in the text I posted with the photo is Silicosis. The mistake could be a typo by the Library or by the original source. I also wondered why a mask is called "helmet" but that's a different story.

You are right on silicosis being the correct spelling - it is still a problem and manufactured stone bench tops have recently been banned here because of the large number of cutters who got silicosis.
