What armament is installed in the wing of the Closest Ki-44? It looks to big to be a 20mm, but I don't think it is one of the few armed with the 40mm either?
Here is what I found. it does say some were equipped with them, but they were extremely ineffective due to the weight and recoil of the cannon (which was capable of only nine shots). SECM

Interesting, I don't think I have ever noticed the small teardrop shaped fairings 40mm cannon fairings before. (at least one version of them anyway) And the Ki-44 in the picture also has the telescopic sight like the drawing.

I never did either. When I bought the kits in 1/72 and 1/48, I never realized the rarity of such a thing. You guys have sure increased my knowledge.

There were two types of fairings for the 40mm cannon: with and without the small teardrops.
IMHO the a/c in the first photo DOS NOT carry 40mm cannons - the fairings of the latter are much bigger - compare with photo below:
Pages from Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki in Japanese Army Air Force Service - Richard Bueschel.jpg

Or it DOES CARRY the 40mm cannons but without any fairings whatsoever.
