A friend told me something interesting about the B-18. It was designed and equipped so that in the event of an intact ditching the crew could rush around and insert corks and plugs to prevent water from entering the fuselage and thereby facilitate recovery of the aircraft.

By the way, although that shot is labeled XB-38, the V-1710 powered version of the B-17, in reality it has to be the XB-39, the V-3420 powered version of the B-29.

I think that's the co-pilots seat. Not many gauges, since they had a flight engineer with his own engine monitoring gauges.

You are probably right but that means the pilot sat further aft with some of his vision obstructed by the copilot.

Yes, it has to be the co-pilot's seat. And note the obsession with the turbo controls. The P-38 used a spring attached to the throttle linkage to control the turbos. The B-29 used electronic turbo controls. And the B-29 had two turbos per engine. With the V-3420's installed rather than the R-3350 they would have to do the same thing. Obviously, some development had to be done and that bore close watching by someone who had close access to the throttles.

Maybe that's why we haven't seen more - this was the one trial and after that no-one else was crazy enough...Don't think I would be wanting to stand that close when the rockets went off.

I think that otherwise he would had found it very useful for the inhabitants of the Gulag Archipiélago.
