I very lazily tried to look up a movie that had James Garner in it once. He was a pilot (probably) in the RAF or Coastal Command. I remember seeing a scene with a B-17 that looked wrong. Anyone else remember that or did I just forget to take my meds?
I was about 4 or 5 at the time.

Here's his IMDb page - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001258/
It lists all of his movies (note: After "Space Cowboys" you have to click on "See all" in order to see all of the movies he did over his entire career).
Take a gander and see if anything looks familiar.

In the 1963 classic film The Great Escape, James Garner plays Flight Lieutenant Bob Hendley, nicknamed "The Scrounger". As an American RAF officer, Hendley is responsible for acquiring materials—from cameras to forged documents—via the black market to aid the POW escape attempt. His character is based on real-life POW Marcel Zillessen.

And, in the movie, he and the Forger (played by Donald Pleasance) steal a Bucker Bu 181 and try unsuccessfully to fly to Switzerland. SO, if the B-17 that didn't look right kinda looked like a Bu 181, that was IT! (JK)

I did see it before I got my first pair of glasses.
BTW Donald Pleasance should have had a better agent.
