This is an old joke but I think it has taken on new meaning.
One day the manager of a factory calls the entire workforce together and makes an announcement.
"Folks we are going to be undergoing some major changes here. Over the next three weeks we will be converting the factory to almost completely automated manufacturing. When that task is complete almost all of your jobs will change radically. During the reconfiguration process you will be trained to maintain and repair the automated equipment. Once that is done there will no longer be a need for you to come to work except one day a week. The rest of the time here will be no one present except some engineers and some quality inspectors. The main part of the workforce will only come to work on Tuesdays to perform the maintenance, except in emergency situations. No one will lose their jobs or have any reduction in pay or benefits. All but one day a week will be yours to do as you wish. You will only come to work on Tuesdays."
And out of the stunned silence came an anguished shout. "WHAT! EVERY TUESDAY?"
I just saw a news report that the country's largest manufacturer of mozzerella cheese is closing its factory in California. Six hundred workers in small town in California will lose their jobs and the impact on the local community as well as suppliers to the factory will be severe. The company has been operating there since 1910. In recent years it had to deal with a $200 Million lawsuit asserting that workers had been underpaid, and while it won that case, another lawsuit forced it to pay $2.5 Million to minority workers who asserted that they had been denied promotions and adequate pay.
The factory needed to be updated with more modern equipment but rather than continue to use the existing facility they chose to invest $1 Billion in an entirely new state of the art factory near Lubbock, TX.
