Hey Jim, they did build them to last, there still here even though Henry VIII ordered many of the destroyed.

Glenn, unfortunately, this particular museum is on the edge of what was once Usworth airfield, a BoB satellite station, which later became Sunderland Airport.
It was closed in the late 1970's, and disappeared under the massive Nissan car factory which now occupies the site of the entire airfield and more. The museum managed to obtain a small site opposite what had been the main entrance to the airfield, and towed the aircraft there, eventually constructing two small hangars, which house the majority of the aircraft and other exhibits, and managed to survive, even after being totally surrounded by sprawling industrial units on what was once open land and fields.
Whether or not the museum funds, even including donations, could stretch to providing hangarage or other suitable cover, it's doubtful if there'd be enough access to allow construction !
I agree it's a shame that some of the aircraft have to remain outdoors, but given the limited funding, in an area of the UK which is still regarded by some as somewhat 'depressed', the museum has managed to keep going and maintain the exhibits.
I haven't been there for almost thirty years, so I'm looking forward to meeting up with Karl there in a couple of weeks.
