That's true, Ernst, but part of the philosophy was to use your maneuverability from your lightened plane to get close enough to the enemy to where you were sure to score some hits, without using too much ammo. And it didn't take too many hits from a 20mm and especially a 37mm cannon to bring down an airplane. Again, just a different philosophy from Western tactics. This philosophy was continued into the postwar era, with piston-engined aircraft like the La-9 and La-11, with their 23mm's on the nose, and the MiG's with their 23mm's and 37mm's again mounted on the nose (or 30mm's in the case of the MiG-19 mounted on the nose and wingroots).
